Redesign

The art of redesigning gives a brand a facelift without erasing its original identity. In most cases the client is presented with a range of steps leading to the brand’s evolution. The client has the freedom to choose the extent of the redesign.

Advice

Edgar is often asked for consultation in choosing typefaces or web-font techniques. He has a broad knowledge of the technical advantages and disadvantages of particular typefaces.

Final Artwork

Newly designed logos often need refinement of balance and shape. Variations of usage also need different optimisations for a final logo.

Custom Type

Edgar excels at designing new fonts for particular clients and events. Type design possibilities range from display-typeface to web-font to a whole professional type-family.

Typeface Modification

As soon as the owner of the copyright gives permission, modifications and improvements can always be made to an existing typeface.

Digitizing Fonts

A hand-drawn or constructed type-sketch can be made into a professional and working typeface.

Your Point Of View

Your Point Of View @ Stroom Den Haag

Your Point Of View @ Stadhuis Den Haag

Corporate Identity

When Edgar starts to create a corporate identity he first wants to understand the mission and business of the client. With a combination of perception and openness he is able to craft an ensemble of design elements which perfectly express the brand or client's image.

The result is a seamless entity that is both highly professional, as well as eye-catching. Clients find it greatly beneficial to have all of their design needs directed from one source.

Logos

To create a logo is to represent the core qualities of a business through a single symbolic element. Edgar produces bold and effective logos that transmit the image and message of the business even when printed in black and white or on a small surface.

Edgar's approach is to intelligently fit the meaning of a brand right into the logotype rather than adding it as a purely decorative component.

Germania Logo Redesign

In the case of Germania, the agency gudella, barche. and the client wanted to take a large step towards a more cutting edge brand design. The former logo was designed in the 1970’s and made some people say it might "arouse flying anxiety".

The redesign maintained the general colour and layout, but created a more modern, curved and calmer logo.

Edgar also fine-tuned the original type, designed by the famous Adrian Frutiger, by looking into the possible errors of digitalization and re-defining the typeface’s original proportions.

Frank Deimel marks his guitars with an auto-traced scan of his signature — a perfect way to brand his distinctly manufactured instruments. In 2010 he decided to bring his production to a new level and asked for an refined version of his logo. He wanted letter shapes that echoed the same precision and attention to form and shape as his own products.Deimel Logo Redesign

Advice

counsel in type-specific questions

Edgar’s love of fonts developed during his studies in Switzerland.
The shapes of letters and the life of
a typeface from design to product always intrigued him. He furthered his understanding of type while studying in the TypeMedia post-graduate course at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague.

Edgar suggests two easy to access sources for dealing with every day type questions (the most popular: what is that font called?).

Myfonts.com has a service called "what the font", which is surprisingly accurate in finding fonts. Another possibility is identifont which also has a large database of type-designers and their fonts.

If these automated services can't do the job, Edgar can help with these inquiries as well as specialized advice such as technical questions about fonts, usage on screen and alternative possibilities or combinations of type-faces.

A free font recognition service provided by Myfonts.com called
"what the font".

Identifont.com is a semi-automated service similar to the link above.

Mythen Logo Final Artwork

In order to create a precise and expressive logo, designers and agencies often need an expert in final artwork to fine-tune original work.

In the case of the Mythen logo, David Clavadetscher had a draft loosely based on an existing typeface. He asked Edgar to fit the letters into the silhouette of the Mythen massif and refine the rhythm and the curves of the logotype.

Gondel with Mythen Logo

In addition, Edgar took care of an optically adjusted version for negative print, defining the color-codes and creating several file-formats.

Custom Type

A custom type is one of the most distinctive communication elements for a brand or organisation. With Ghetto Radio , for instance, a custom type enabled the brand to evolve from a small organisation devoted primarily to their Kenyan radio station into the larger and more international This is Africa.

The unusual capital-ligatures give every line of words a logo-character without additional touch-ups. The font is also used as a web-font on their thisisafrica.me site.

Type Modification

 Thijs Gadiot Plotter-Font

Sometimes an existing font needs adjustments to fit the needs of a client.

Though technically Edgar has all the abilities to make such changes or refinement of a font, he will not start with an assignment until the owner of the copyright is contacted and permission is given. Generally the best way to ask for a modification of the typeface is to contact the creator or foundry that sells the typeface.

If this direct service is not possible for whatever reason, Edgar will be happy to make necessary modifications.

Examples of changes include: alliterative shapes or figures, missing letters for foreign languages, improvement of kerning or hinting, or even adding a missing weight or width.

Digitizing Typefaces

Handmade or experimental typefaces are as popular as ever. While most designers set them "by hand", it is often less time consuming to work with a font-file. Furthermore, web-fronts add even more potential for usability.

In addition to a black and white font, photofonts make it possible to create a type-able font out of colored photos or illustrations. Edgar has the software and ability to create this new technic.

Type Production

Edgar Walthert's Notebook

One of many checklists to keep track of the changes in different weights and files of Taz III at LucasFonts.

Since 2007, Edgar has worked as a freelance type designer at LucasFonts in Berlin, where he enhances original typefaces produced by studio founder Luc(as) de Groot. His assignment is primarily to further development of the Taz Family. For instance, he might add more widths, additional glyps for use in foreign languages, or correct hairline cuts of this contemporary typeface.

While working at LucasFonts and other studios, Edgar realized that he is skilled at adapting to someone else's handwriting or style. The expertise and experience he gains while working with a master of the profession is invaluable. In addition he learns and refines skills that he can apply, both to his graphic design practice and in the production of his own typefaces

Agile Typeface

Agile Typeface Specimen Poster

Agile was the Edgar’s TypeMedia graduation project.

He then developed it into an extensive type family.

In a time when new text faces are published almost every day, Edgar noticed a gap between clean, rather technical faces, and those typefaces with pronounced influences from handwriting.

Starting with experimental, unusual letterforms, the design gradually evolved, in a process of fine-tuning and adapting the characters to each other until they formed a harmonious whole. Compared to many other digitally produced fonts, Agile has a large number of unique shapes — similar segments that nevertheless are not simply clones of each other, but have been adapted to the individual letters. This approach lends Agile its lively and organic nature.

The result of this rather artisanal method is a pleasurable alphabet that is suitable for both headlines and longer body text; its spirited nature is evident in small as well as in larger point sizes.

The Agile family comes in 10 weights, from Hairline to Fat. These are accompanied by true italics — 20 fonts in all, each including small caps, extensive language support, several sets of numerals, a fine choice of ligatures, many alternate letters and more. These features make Agile a reliable tool for almost any typographic challenge.

Agile is distributed through Village's sub foundry Incubator.

Jan Middendorp, the well known type journalist and book designer used Agile as the main text-typeface in a textbook about mindfulness. The choice of Agile for an entire book's typeface is evidence of  its great legibility.

In the recently released Shaping Text, a guide for working with type, Middendorp used Agile as the title typeface.

Die Balz is a magazine made by and about Balz Isler in collaboration with friends and fellow artists. Balz asked Edgar to design the complete magazine for a solo exhibition at Kunsthaus Essen. The result was a witty overview of Balz’s work in the style of a glossy art magazine. Swiss designer Anton Studer provided the featured typefaces.

The magazine prominently features the project ‘Tapmosphere’ an ongoing installation created with friends Block Barley and Béla Pablo Janssen.

Chateau Techno

Chateau Techno - 1st partyChateau Techno - 1 Year Anniversary

This icon helped Chateau Techno to advertise a successful party series. The knight’s helmet is now associated with one of the biggest tech house events in Amsterdam.

With the Chateau Techno logo, Edgar aimed to create a simple and fluid design, which easily transforms to fit different events. Comparable to the iconic Absolut Vodka advertising campaign, each new poster thematises the logo, but retains its strong geometry and recognizable identity.

Shortly after beginning their collaboration with Edgar, Chateau Techno won a Dutch Techno Award and sold out a huge venue even before announcing the acts.

Dendemann

For more than ten years Edgar has produced all of the designs for the German rapper Dendemann.

Edgar first created the iconic logotype for Dendemann’s former hip-hop duo Eins Zwo in 1999.

In the years since, Dendemann has produced several records, endless promotional and merchandise material and two websites, each in close collaboration between musician and designer.

Dendemann's homepage was inspired by a GUI (graphic user interface), fitting the PowerBook design of the album sleeve.

The icons which have been created for this artwork, get more into focus in the section of illustration.

The cover artwork for "Die Pfütze des Eisbergs" was based on a classic American notebook design. Dendemann used to write his notes, ideas and lyrics in such a journal. The deluxe version came in a specially configured digi-pack with enclosed booklet featuring reproductions of his original notes.

For the live album, "AbersowasvonLive", the same cover transformed into a well-worn version of the same booklet.

Vom Vintage Verweht

Dendemann - Stumpf Ist TrumpfDendemann - Stupf Ist Trumpf / Recordjunkie - 7-Inch

The second studio album "Vom Vintage Verweht" (Gone with the vintage), took the design of the previous album a step further. As Dendemann now was writing and making songs-sketches on a PowerBook, it was the logical follow-up design for this album.

The naively drawn graffiti which is decorating it, is inspired by 80es school-book doodling.

Fitting to the vintage-theme and the computer, the singles where designed as obsolete data carrier.

To complete this conceptual design time-travel, the website was created based on a GUI and with pop-up windows. Contrasting new and old technics as much as the music on Vom Vintage Verweht does.

Dendemann launched a solo career in 2003, and has become an important figure in the German cultural and music world.

Ghetto Radio Typeface

The Ghetto Radio typeface is meant to echo the strong style of the station's bulldog icon. The type acts as a kind of logo in and of itself. How is this accomplished? Connections between letters are created atomatically by OpenType technic. The unusual capital ligatures create a solid look on every line of text and are thus turn words automatically into logos.

When shortly after the creation of this identiy, the European department of Ghetto Radio decided to change their name to This is Africa, all they had to do was to type the new brand name using their personalised font.

The radio station in Nairobi, Kenya is still uses the original name Ghetto Radio in combination with the bulldog. Thanks of the strong and recognisable typeface, the identities of the two organizations can focus on their particular target-group and location. Still, they will always be clearly connected through the usage of the same typeface.

Logical

Logotyper is Edgar’s newest typeface and is currently in the design-phase. While Agile explored natural movement and a lively pattern within the text, Logotyper could be said to do the opposite. Logical is inspired to a greater extent by the grid and a linear work process.

Because of his insight into the technics of hinting and optimisation of fonts for the screen, Edgar decided at an early stage to include beneficial attributes to the typeface that would result in enhanced digital legibility.

Edgar plans to add abundant pictographical icons and shapes that will fit the weight of the fonts.

This is a concept he already started in Agile and with a custom typeface for De Toneelmakkerij.

the quick brown fox jumps over a lazy dog

These symbols, other useful shapes and many OpenType features make this typeface fun to work with. In other words, Logical will have many application possibilities beyond making logos.

The uppercase has narrow and even proportions and is reminiscent of a monospaced typeface.

Though it already has enough glyphs to appear as the leading typeface on this website, Logical still needs at it will take at least half a year before it is finished and released.

Look forward to logotyper's release in late 2013 to early 2014.

Molotow Brass Orkestar

 Molotow Brass Orkestar - Albumcovers

For Molotow Brass Orkestar Edgar created an alter ego from a century past. Whenever the band has a design request, he grabs a pencil and paper and begins to draw.

This brass quintet plays a wild mix of balkan-brass and swiss-folk. The normally dapper musicians grab their vintage instruments and clothing and play infectious up-tempo music.

To compliment this rawness and celebration of old-fashioned ways, Edgar designed a hand-drawn look. While the band’s logo changes from one album to the next, the style has an unmistakable identity.

CD's and other merchandise can be ordered and listened to on their own website.

Sonic Waves Typeface

Sonic Waves Typeface

Sonic waves, as the title implies, is intended to simulate both sight and sound. This typeface was developed as part of the audiovisual exhibition Into Infinity, co-curated by dublab and Creative Commons.

Following the figure-eight shape of the infinity symbol, DJ’s contributed 8-second sound loops, while visual artists designed accompanying 8-inch circle. Edgar contributed both a musical and visual work in one. The result: an innovative, and quite literal, representation of the audiovisual.

This is Africa

In 2009 Maarten Brouwer and Siji Jabbar, the co-founders of This is Africa (TIA), asked Esther de Boer and Edgar Walthert to create a new logo and visual identity for their Nairobi based community radio station Ghetto Radio. The mission was to create a strong international logo to speak to a range of listeners.

Because none of the proposed typefaces fit entirely to the aim of the customers, Edgar offered TIA a custom tailored logo-font. He designed a flexible font that could be easily used by a third hand in a variety of contexts.

Meanwhile This is Africa expanded to form a platform for African arts, culture and politics and used the same type face designed for Ghetto Radio.

Edgar creates most visual content for TIA, including three-dimensional exhibitions, animation and the design for a new iPhone app.

De Toneelmakerij

The display typeface for De Toneelmakerij was tailored to the style of their graphic designer Esther de Boer.
It also resembles typical attributes of type seen on buildings and streets across Amsterdam. After studying Esther's work, Edgar decided to highlight her use of small icons and pictograms.

The typeface comes with a large set of symbols that can be used for information or supporting illustrations. To make them accessible for the whole staff of the company, Edgar made an extra dingbats version and created an index of the typeface on an accompanying mouse pad.

For the company's website, Edgar developed a cut optimised for the screen. The typeface and symbols are now broadly used on Toneelmakerij’s website.

Esther de Boer is a graphic-designer working primarily with arts and cultural organizations. She previously collaborated with Edgar in the development of Ghetto Radio and a project for Groen Links in 2010.
